GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION 

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a hands-on role in supporting individuals with disabilities as they engage in meaningful work, recreation, volunteering, or daily living activities in both community and facility-based settings. This role focuses on promoting independence, safety, and social inclusion by providing direct assistance, skill-building, and encouragement aligned with each participant’s individual service plan. DSPs are the frontline champions of participation, helping people show up fully in their communities while ensuring their health, dignity, and well-being are always front and center.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education: 

High School diploma or equivalency required, two-years of college preferred 

Other:

  • 21+ years of age. 
  • Criminal background must meet funding source requirements. 
  • Reliable transportation and valid Michigan driver's license.
  • Driving record must be approved by Agency insurance carrier
  • Complete all assigned trainings including but not limited to CPR, First Aid and Recipient Rights. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and professionally with participants and staff.
  • Composition skills sufficient to prepare required documentation. 
  • Fluency in American Sign Language is a plus. 
  • Basic computer skills
  • Reliable transportation and valid Michigan driver's license.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Plan, implement and supervise activities that promote a healthy, active and socially integrated lifestyle for people with disabilities in facility, recreation, employment, volunteer, and other community settings.
  • Assist participants with employment, daily living, personal care, hygiene and grooming including physical assistance in transferring and mobility as needed.
  • Oversee the administration and documentation of medication as assigned.
  • Provide support and training based on goals in service plans
  • Supervise and maintain the safety of participants.
  • Transport participants using Agency van.
  • Complete assigned training, daily reports and respond to email using Agency computers.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Serve on Agency committee(s) as appointed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental conditions:

  • Moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).
  • Ability to work in a confined area.
  • Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period.

Physical requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard, reach, stoop, kneel to install computer equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
  • Light to moderate lifting in required.
