Economist
The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures labor market activity, working conditions, price changes, and productivity in the U.S. economy to support public and private decision making. The position is located in the Office of Productivity and Technology, Division of Industry Productivity Studies. THIS IS NOT A REMOTE POSITION. Duties include, but are not limited to: Responsible for the technical planning and execution of a portion of the research and analytical program of the Division of Industry Productivity Studies, with respect to industry productivity measurement. Plans and conducts research, interpreting concepts and definitions, developing productivity and cost measures for industries in various sectors of the economy; plans and prepares studies of productivity and cost measures for industries as assigned. Develops weighting systems for the combining of products and price indexes for producing output series, aggregating capital inputs, and intermediate purchase inputs. Participates with senior staff in the formulation of the research program for the Division.
Requirements
Basic Requirement Economist, 0110: A) Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. OR B) Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized Experience In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-12, in the Federal Service. This one year of specialized experience must be in or related to the field of economics and must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, judgment, and technical competence in order to successfully perform the duties of the position to be filled. To qualify, applicants must show evidence of at least two of the specialized experience examples below in their resume: Perform individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation. Coordinate project assignments involving a team of professional economists and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information. Write or modify code in statistical software such as SAS or Python to support production processes.
